Overview of SDG 16: Peace, Justice, and Strong Institutions
Sustainable Development Goal 16 (SDG 16) aims to promote peaceful and inclusive societies for sustainable development, provide access to justice for all, and build effective, accountable, and inclusive institutions at all levels. It is a fundamental goal within the United Nations' 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development.
Targets of SDG 16:
Reduce Violence Everywhere: Significantly reduce all forms of violence and related death rates everywhere.
Protect Children from Abuse: End abuse, exploitation, trafficking, and all forms of violence and torture against children.
Promote the Rule of Law: Promote the rule of law at the national and international levels and ensure equal access to justice for all.
Reduce Illicit Flows: By 2030, significantly reduce illicit financial and arms flows, strengthen the recovery and return of stolen assets, and combat all forms of organized crime.
Substantially Reduce Corruption and Bribery: Substantially reduce corruption and bribery in all their forms.
Develop Effective, Accountable, and Transparent Institutions: Develop effective, accountable, and transparent institutions at all levels.
Ensure Responsive, Inclusive, and Representative Decision-Making: Ensure responsive, inclusive, participatory, and representative decision-making at all levels.
Broaden and Strengthen Participation in Institutions: Broaden and strengthen the participation of developing countries in the institutions of global governance.
Provide Legal Identity for All: By 2030, provide legal identity for all, including birth registration.
Ensure Public Access to Information and Protect Fundamental Freedoms: Ensure public access to information and protect fundamental freedoms, in accordance with national legislation and international agreements.
Strengthen National Institutions to Prevent Violence and Combat Terrorism and Crime: Strengthen relevant national institutions to prevent violence and combat terrorism and crime.
Promote and Enforce Non-Discriminatory Laws and Policies: Promote and enforce non-discriminatory laws and policies for sustainable development.
Indicators of SDG 16:
The indicators for SDG 16 are numerous and diverse, covering aspects like rates of violence, trafficking, legal identity, public access to information, and the effectiveness of national institutions. These indicators are designed to measure progress towards each of the above targets.
